The Truth About Fuel in E-Hailing: Why Strategy Is Important

Fuel is the biggest expense for any e-hailing driver. But many drivers don’t really track it properly. They know how much they spend on petrol but they don’t calculate how much it costs per kilometre. That small detail is what decides whether you make profit or not.

In South Africa, fuel prices change often. Even a small increase per litre can reduce your weekly profit. If you drive 250–350 km per day, that small increase becomes thousands of rand lost in a month not because there are fewer trips, but because costs were not controlled.

There are three main things that affect fuel usage:

  1. Driving behaviour Fast acceleration, harsh braking, and leaving the car idling waste fuel. Smooth driving saves fuel without reducing trips.

  2. Vehicle condition Poor tyre pressure and bad maintenance increase fuel consumption.

  3. Route planning Driving around without direction wastes fuel. Smart drivers move to busy areas instead of cruising aimlessly.

Empty kilometres (driving without a passenger) bring zero income but still use fuel. Top drivers reduce these “dead kilometres” by understanding where demand is high. Vehicle choice also matters. Smaller engine cars with good fuel economy often make more profit than bigger cars even if both earn the same per trip. The difference shows when you calculate cost per kilometre, not just total income.

The e-hailing industry rewards drivers who manage costs properly. Fuel control is no longer optional it is part of being professional. At TM Transportation, we believe that understanding your expenses is what turns a driver into a business operator. If you don’t control your fuel, your fuel will control your profit.
